Luma Island – Farming Adventure

The game is very similar to projects such as Stardew Valley, but has its own specifics. Here the emphasis is on solving mysteries, exploring complex locations and finding secrets. Crafting, gardening, fishing and other similar things are also present in more than enough. With the recent free update Pirates, the project got a second wind, expanding both the universe and the capabilities of its inhabitants.
Luma Island is a farming simulator, generously seasoned with elements of adventure, crafting, exploration and leveling up professions. But calling the game simply a sim would not be entirely accurate. Farming concerns here are just a background for an exciting journey through a mysterious island, where something amazing can be hidden around every corner: mysterious caves, unusual creatures or puzzles. This world encourages inquisitive players who enjoy a leisurely pace and cozy atmosphere.

The design of the world is pleasing to the eye: picturesque forests, ancient ruins, waterfalls and rain landscapes create a rich, but not overloaded picture. In style, the game resembles a hybrid of Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon, but at the same time has its own visual character. The interface is simple and intuitive: one click is enough to start chopping down a tree, constructing a building or petting a luma – your furry assistant. At first, you start with a small van, but over time you acquire a house, farm, tools and professions. There are already eight of them – with a recent update, the profession of a shipbuilder appeared. Each profession has its own tasks, skills and in-game mechanics. Want to be a cook, a blacksmith or a herbalist? Please. And most importantly, you can change the direction at any time.

The co-op mode works stably and offers a lot of activities: you can explore dungeons, collect resources or build together. The new feature of tracking a friend on the map is a convenient innovation that allows you to easily find each other. The Pirates add-on brought a lot of useful improvements: an improved map, markers, waypoints and a full-fledged quest log.

The DLC itself turned out to be truly large-scale — instead of a couple of new items, players were offered an entire location: Pirate Bay with new quests, buildings, mini-games, and even a separate house. Cursed ruins were added to familiar regions, the farm was redesigned — it became more convenient for construction and planning, which will especially please lovers of order. The add-on also introduced three game modes: “cozy”, “adventure”, and “heroic”. They differ not only in the complexity of battles, but also in the economy, production speed, and the consequences of death. Now you can choose a play style — relaxed or challenging — and, if desired, change it right during the game.

With the new profession of shipwright, the game now includes the ability to repair and build a pirate ship. Dozens of new tasks related to pirates and their history have appeared, as well as a whole storyline dedicated to the search for the missing crew.
Mini-games have also added variety – from whip throwing to pirate musical battles and arm wrestling with skeletons. You can now create your own pirate-themed corner on the farm – items for this are unlocked as you progress.

Technically, the game still needs some work, but Pirates has fixed a lot of problems: improved visual cues, reworked the map, made lums less “glitchy”, and the upgrade system smoother and more player-friendly. Rare resources have become easier to obtain, which will be especially appreciated by those who do not like excessive grinding.
If you value games in which you can calmly build, farm and explore a large world without losing interest – Luma Island deserves your attention. With the release of Pirates, it has become richer, deeper and simply more convenient. This is a great time to get acquainted with the game or return to it after a break.
